What states would you consider as belonging to the southeastern United States? Sometimes there's a bit of difference on what some people view as southeastern.

The Southeast to me is every State that is:
---- East of the Mississippi River all the way to the Atlantic Ocean
---- South of the Ohio River & Potomac River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico

4 states listed; Texas, Louisana, Arkansas and Oklahoma are part of the greater South but not the Southeast. They are South Central or the "Western South" if you will. In the Civil War, the Confederacy called the South Central area the "Trans-Mississippi", which was so remote from the rest of the South, it almost governed itself.

Maryland is historical Southern, and in some ways it still might be. But Maryland is very debatable, especially here on City-Data. I am really not sure, but today it probably fits in better with the Northeast (including Maryland's small size is similar to other NE states).

I voted "South-East" in the sense of geography.

So Georgia, SC, NC and Florida.

However, "The South" includes all of the states listed excluding Maryland and the far northern parts of West Virginia.

Louisiana, parts of Arkansas, and parts of Texas are southeastern, but not the southeast.

Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Florida are no brainers. North Carolina is a yes. Tennessee and Kentucky are known as mid south but I still chose them as Southeastern. I was on the fence for Arkansas and Louisiana. Historically, they are different than the other southeast states. Texas, Virginia, Oklahoma, and Maryland, no.

you
If you mean southeastern in culture they are in someways. But I have read about some foods over in the far SE that we don't have here. Or at least aren't common.

Never heard of serving hushpuppies with BBQ
Boiled peanuts aren't very well known here either
No shrimp and grits

If you don't believe me, then that may be your problem or maybe you know some differnet people than who I associate with. I can tlell you even more about how regionalized the food can get.
