Moving out of NYC to more rural.... don't know where to start! (fit in)

Greetings everyone! Future husband and I (28, 34 yrs old) have lived in NYC our whole lives, and are ready to get out of here and back to nature. We both currently live in the same homes we've grown up in, so we are very new to moving and home-buying and I am at a total loss about how to find the right place to live out-of-state!

Here are some of our criteria:

- Home around $150k, if possible with some acres of land - one of the main reasons we want to get out of NYC is to have a little dirt we can call our own, the more the better!

- If possible, warmer climate - I've had enough of cold NY winters!

- FH is Puerto Rican (I am white) and we are liberal, non-religious, so we would not fit in with conservative white Christian towns, so someplace with a more liberal community is needed - unfortunately this seems to cross out most of the places that fit the first two criteria!

- Don't mind being out-of-the-way, but accessible to high-speed internet is an absolute must


There are others, but those are the main ones and we realize we cannot be very picky with our limited budget. We have dreams of hobby farming on the side, but realize we'll need to start small since we don't have much to invest now, but it would really be a plus if we could at least have a few acres of land to play with. I've really, really had enough of this sardine can of a city and need to stretch out!

There are just thousands upon thousands of small towns in the US and I just have NO clue how to even start finding a good place to research. Every day I say to FH, "I want to move." And he says, "Ok. Where?" And thats where we get stumped. If anyone has any location suggestions or how I can go about my search, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Ditto on Texas. You could find what you are looking for in most of the major cities and 99% of the small towns.

By the way, I would start in the suburban/rural areas of Austin and Houston. They are most likely to be more liberal than the others.

Do you mind staying sorta close to home? Because i just feel like Frederick MD could be nice. many parts of Maryland could be nice for you. But Frederick is Affordable enough, has lots of farms in Frederick County, and the city itself is very liberal itself. Its pretty affordable too with internet cafes and things around along with lots of little shops and restaurants. Lots of Festivals go on there and its a fun place to be. the population of the city is 60k.Also, its 45 Minutes from Both DC and Baltimore so if you're missing city life, its easily accessible. New York is about 4 hours away if you still have family up there and want to visit. Of Course, Texas would probably be much more inexpensive and warmer. but Frederick is always a good choice
