What do you think is the trendiest, most modern, classiest city in the south? As far as nightlife, job opportunity, shopping options, flashy people, nice cars.....ect......

What city in the south do you think has progressed more on an economic level, diversity level and just a better quality of life?

Which southern city do you think could give the high energy and options of Los Angeles or Miami a run for their money!?

Whats the best city in the deep south (AL, GA, LA, MI)?

I wouldn't put "trendiest", "classiest" and "flashy" in the same sentence. I think you're asking for several different things.

Trendiest? Probably Miami. Definitely a place where you'll see trends start (think fashion, food and architecture). Dallas and Atlanta try and would like to see themselves as trendy, but aren't so much.

Classiest? Hard to say. Depends on your definition of "classy." There are several Southern cities where you see lots of "old money" and families who have been there forever. New Orleans comes to mind... think the Garden District.

Flashy? Miami and Dallas (and it's not always a good thing).

World player and economic powerhouse? Houston.

Michigan isn't in the Deep South. Did you mean MS?

I would only seriously consider GA and LA, and out of those two your only options are Atlanta and New Orleans, and then I wouldn't consider NOLA to be modern or flashy or have a good quality of life and job opportunities or to have progressed all that much, so that leaves you with Atlanta by process of elimination. There you go!

Well, these are really different questions.

Atlanta, without a doubt, is the most modern Southern city, with Charlotte closing the gap fast.

As far as total economic diversity, social change, and quality of life, however, I would offer that Birmingham and Chattanooga have probably come the farthest way in the shortest period of time.

As far as best city in the South, that really depends on your criteria. After all, if you're a 20-something wanting to have fun, then Atlanta is the place to be. If, one the other hand, you're a parent who commutes downtown to work, but needs an affordable neighborhood, then Atlanta is not where you want to call home.

What cpg said.

I'd like to nominate Charleston SC as the classiest city.

Asheville and Austin have a shot at most trendy but to me that doesn't = flashy. Depends on what trends you follow I suppose.

I would also nominate Charleston as the classiest city.

Richmond, Raleigh, and Austin seem to be pretty trendy IMO.

Trendiest city: Austin, TX ... by far. They have the "creative class cache" going for them that other cities are only just now trying to emulate.

Most economically advantageous city: Given present circumstances, it is a tie between Houston, TX and Atlanta, GA. The high price of oil has definitely benefited Houston, but Atlanta has an economy with more diversity and breadth.

Classiest city: By traditional southern standards, it's Savannah, GA. By modern standards, I think it's Charlotte.

Best city in the deep south If you can only choose from the aforementioned states, then I don't see how you can choose anyplace other than Atlanta.
