My father moved us from Socorro, NM to alabama and I honestly hate this place. If you think its hard to get a job in NM without knowing anyone just try alabama. Its the good ol-boy system at its best and you can forget about getting a good job unless you know someone or you have a certain last name. I hope you like tons of bugs and ridiculously hot and humid weather also because that is pretty much all this place has to offer. And be prepared to be called a yank and be treated badly if you move to a small town and don't have a southern accent.
I would say New Mexico because they have some towns that are in elevations of 8500' meaning for some nice cool summers and great scenery... Right now is 79 degrees sunny with 45% humidity... As much as I love the south i.e. Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina I would still take NM over Alabama.... Sorry!
what about the people? Anyone have any interactions with New Mexicans and Alabamans, Me and my girlfriend are Spanish, I am more light complected and she is brown, is brown acceptable in Alabama?
People are alot better, belive me on that one.
So is the food, the culture and just about everything!
