I agree. Parts of SF struck me as a little sleepy. It's a pretty small city. I think there's probably more to do in L.A.
I think I already voted for SF, but I think I'd change my vote to L.A. for intimidating and exhilarating. Because of its layout and population size, it can be a hard city to get to know. I haven't visited Chicago, but it doesn't seem that intimidating.
San Francisco is such a small and compact city. While there are lots of people walking around, it still seems to have a small city feel. Its the type of place where you could easily run into a few people you know just walking down the street. In my opinion, urban does not just equal exhilarating and intimidating. The intimidating one is what really gets me about SF because I don't find anything really intimidating about it. The city is crawling with tourists too so the city feels even less intimidating because of them. I do love San Francisco and think it is a great city, but not necessarily the most intimidating and exhilarating. A best city indeed, but not a winner in this specific type of poll in my opinion.
Seattle is neither intimidating nor exhilarating. It's a decent mid-sized city in an amazing location. The city itself is rather bland, if you ignore the views. Boston, on the other hand, is both. Especially if you're driving.
Which other cities other than Boston, Philly, San Fran, and the obvious NY and CHI have more a more urban, fast paced downtown vibe than Seattle?

L.A.
-Enormous city
-4.2 Million residents
-Different settings in every corner
-Hollywood
-Beaches
-Crowds and Crowds of different faces
-Several Amusement Parks
The title should be "Most exhilirating cities?" not just assume that everybody thinks NYC and Chicago are the most entimidating...which is all personal opinion.
I'm sorry, but Chicago is FAR from intimidating or exhilarating.
I would say New York and Los Angeles are the most exhilarating cities in the United States, followed by possibly Miami or San Francisco.
Exhilarating cities to me are cities that are different or stand out from other cities in this country. I view Chicago as an overgrown Midwestern city. Almost like a very large Milwaukee. I truly fail to see how Chicago is a standout city.
Miami feels exhilarating to me because it is unlike any other city in the United States. It has a tropical, Latin American vibe that no other city has. San Franicsco is exhilarating because it designed like an East Coast city in a West Coast natural setting. Los Angeles in exhilarating because of it's setting and the fact that it has emerged from a barren, small cow-town to a fashion capital, the center of US cinema, a cultural hub, etc. in the space of about 120 years.
Anyone who thinks LA's downtown is more lively than Chicago needs to go back to Chicago.
