Detroit had a population of 951,270 in 2000. Its 900,000+ population might've extended to at least 2002. You can see it for yourself on AF.

Here's a whole barrel of numbers. Multi-core metros are fun like that.

Raleigh/Durham CSA = 2,037,430
Raleigh - 423,179 = 20.8%
Raleigh + Durham - 423,179 + 245,550 = 32.8%

Raleigh/Cary MSA = 1,188,564
Raleigh - 423,179 = 35.6%

Durham/Chapel Hill MSA = 522,826
Durham - 245,550 = 46.9%

Point taken. I should have said maybe a dozen years instead of 20. I'd guess the city now with a population of around 700,000 probably accounts for only a sixth of the people in the metro area metro area.
