It's probably also somewhat unique in being a very LARGE American city, whose Mayor publically and unabashedly counts himself as on the "side" of illlegals. While this occurs also in smaller towns, none have quite the exposure of LA.
It's ALSO, of course, the "new Ellis Island", and as such, is squarely in the 'eye of the storm' of ALL immigration-related issues, illegal or legal. In today's PC atmosphere, immigration is quite a different matter than it was 50 or 75 years ago....and LA is 'where it's at'...
Both are good points. The Mayor is a very big factor.
You know what's exaggerated? MS-13. I have a family member who works for the Oakland Police Department, and he says that they're really not all that "super" as the media portrays them.
Thank you.
Every decade the media makes one gang or group of gangs sound like Hezbollah in their organization and power. I wouldn't want to be on the bad side of Mara Salvatrucha if there was a clique close to me, but their pretty unorganized and mostly a danger to only those directly around them.
Both are good points. The Mayor is a very big factor.
The awkward aspect of Los Angeles is that Latinos make-up 46% of the census w/ increasing clout. LA is essentially a sanctuary city [like San Francisco] & heavily Catholic [Cardinal Mahony has ordered his priest to defy the federal government].
No. Discourse-wise, there's too much parody with American cities. Meaning, our big, avant-garde cities deserve much more attention than the 'Middletowns', that may be great places to live, but haven't contributed as much towards contemporary American culture (e.g., art/ design, cuisine, politics).
Yes, Los Angeles is over-exaggerated on this forum. Dramatically so. Painfully, even.
Los Angeles is probably the least understood city on the North American subcontinent. It's filled to the brim with normal people living their lives to the best of their ability. The city receives a lot of press from one of the more well-known industries in the area. It has a very exclusive profile internationally.
I think the most interesting part of LA is how it is made out to be something it was never meant to be. It developed an entirely suburban mindset because it was popularized by real estate agents in the '50's. It was built entirely on a "what's right is what's right now" mindset without the experience or necessities that shaped much older cities. For what it is, it functions well enough.
L.A is definatly over exaggerated. THe only ones you usually see hating on it are northeners who are mad because there losing their population to the west and the south.
I been observeing this forum lately and I had notice how much L.A. gets exaggerated to much when some has to ask what are you talking about is L.A. that bad. If it's so bad why do over 3 million people live in L.A. and 18 million live in the county, if its so bad why wont they leave. Los Angeles is the 2nd biggest city in America, and yet you guys say its a bad city, have any of you even been their? Its allso a world class city (a Alpha city) and yet you guys say its ugly and nasty when its not i seenLA
People believe that it's too spread-out, you must rely on your car to go somewhere, and it's being overtaken by Hispanics... All of which is true. The end.
