With the exception of the central high desert region, Washington easily gets my vote. A large amount of beauty and diversity packed into a small (small for the Western U.S.) state.
Though there are lots of biomes, vegetation zones, and elevations in California, they seem to have everything except the one I love the most: lakes and deciduous trees.
In my opinion, here are my top five favorites:
1) New York
2) Maine
3) Michigan
4) Wisconsin
5) New Hampshire/Vermont (tie)
Though, some of my most beautiful memories include eating oysters at a picnic table in Tamales Bay, CA, seeing the sun rise in North Dakota, sitting by a cliff looking out over Lake Superior just northeast of Duluth, Minnesota on a relatively warm winter day, and watching the fog roll through the valleys and gulches in Northeastern Ohio on a crisp morning in late summer.

California doesn't have lakes? When did that happen? Must have been about the time they removed all the deciduous trees, too?
All obviously since the last time I was there. Why doesn't anyone ever inform me of these major changes?
Why? Well, we could argue for any state but frankly I think Arizona has the best variety of it all. All within a short distance of each other. You can go to our typical Saguaros, to grasslands (Great Plains look-a-like), to pine trees with snow all within an hour on an Interstate. You can also go to the high desert with all of its odd rock formations, or in the southern part of the state with Joshua trees and caves. We also have some of the best sunsets, since the dust helps it glow more and it creates a lot of color.
Show me one part of California that resembles the scenery around Ithaca, New York?
Don't tell me what to do, thanks. I can be just as passive aggressive as I care to be.
And Ithaca? I thought the thread was about beautiful states.
And lol. I tried to find an image from Ithaca that was so beautiful that it couldn't be replicated anywhere in California. The only thing that seemed to turn up much was of the falls. If you'd care to provide me with something you think is so unique to Ithaca, I'm sure that I can find it in California.
