I'm going off to college this fall and want to go somewhere that i'd like to stay at after school. I'm from MN and hate the winter so I plan to go south. I want someplace warm and affordable. I don't really like humidity, can't stand high 90's, and am a conservative though not religious. I want to have a place to go offroading in my truck and a state that is gun-friendly and doesn't scrutinize the smog equipment on my car. Where is my heaven?

Hmmm. Well, the climate criteria I think would restrict you to the Pacific Northwest, although of course, the area can get really dreary and grey so that may be an issue for you, and it's somewhat pricy as well. I can't think of an area that would be your perfect heaven really but I'm thinking you'd have to make the least amount of compromises if not in the Pacific Northwest, in the Interior West (i.e. Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, etc.). Have you looked into University of New Mexico or New Mexico State? There can be a bit of snow in the winter, and temperatures can get pretty hot in the summer, but there's low humidity, I believe the laws are gun-friendly and very live and let live, and it's pretty affordable

If you don't want 90+ or humidity, yeah, you're going to have to be out west. Washington, Oregon, California are probably your best 3 states. They're not very cheap overall, but you might find a bargain. The catch is it will be inland in Washington or Oregon, or in a Cali desert.

As for conservative, neither of those 3 states are really conservative as far as I know.

You might consider Boise State. Boise is not as cold as you would think in the winter; certainly not as cold as MN! We rarely got snow, because Boise is a high desert climate. Idaho is certainly gun friendly and conservative, too. A lot of people ride ATVs and such, so you wouldn't have a problem off-roading. Boise has a few weeks in the summer where it will be in the 90s or even 100s, but the humidity is low and it really cools off at night. Ada County (where Boise proper is) does have emissions tests on cars, but it's really a joke. None of the adjacent counties have them though...as a matter of fact I'm not even sure if any other county in Idaho has them.

Default I might look at some parts of Georgia

Maybe something like the mountains or elevated areas in GA. Would not buy into the idea automatically that all areas of the south are off limits.

Should find the Good Olde Boys to be a bit gun friendly and conservative. Don't know about the smog thing but you do see trucks that don't look like they are super "Green in Nature".

I would beware of the Pacific Northwest, the next Big Wave might get you.
