Philly Suburbs Guy is on a distinguished road
Default Looking To Start Over - Would Appreciate Your Insight!

I'm a SWM, 40, never married, no kids. I've been living in the suburbs of Philly all my life, and looking to start anew elsewhere. I know it won't be easy, given that all my family and friends are here, but it's time to move on.

I currently work in an administrative assistant capacity for one of the home shopping channels. I'm basically a jack-of-all-trades in the office. But I also have experience as a bartender, supervisor in a retail store, program coordinator for a non-profit, accounting/bookkeeping assistant in a bank, and even took a go at my own business for a little while.

Also an aspiring singer/songwriter, and screenwriter, two dreams that have been with me for a long time, and will either come true, or die with me.

My biggest job concern is finding one in a place where the wages are on par with the cost of living in that area. The areas I have been looking at are either in the city itself or surrounding suburbs of Denver, Nashville, LA, and Seattle. I'm open to any of them, because they each have things I like/dislike. And I know I could learn to adapt no matter where I ended up.

As far as the ideal job I would like to have while chasing my dream, if possible, event planner, or even an assistant to one. I've had the opportunity to do some event planning while in my current position, as well as when I was a program coordinator. And certainly my bartending experience would come into play.

If anyone has any suggestions, thoughts, ideas, I would appreciate hearing them. And if there are any recruiters out there who might be able to point me in the right direction, I’d be much obliged.

Peace.

The wages really are not on par with the cost of living in LA. You need a degree and a good job to live decently in that city for the most part BUT it probably would be the best to follow your dreams. The only thing is a lot of people go there for the same dreams as well so you'll have plenty of competition. If you can get a good to decent job and don't mind living in a small apartment and can do w/o unnecessary material things then LA is doable.

Thanks sav858. You're right, LA is doable, but as you alluded to, there are a lot of dream-seekers out there. Plus, from what I understand, a good many of them are only interested in whether or not you can help them get to where they want to be, and if not, don't want to be bothered with you. And nowadays, you don't necessarily have to be smack in the middle of the action. LA is a bit of tough call. Thanks again!
