Albuquerque has history in its name!
The city was founded in 1706 as the Spanish colonial outpost of Ranchos de Alburquerque.
The village was named by the provincial governor Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdes in honour of Don Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, Duke of Alburquerque, viceroy of New Spain from 1653 to 1660. The first "r" in "Alburquerque" was dropped at some point in the 19th century, supposedly by an Anglo-American railroad station-master unable to correctly pronounce the city's name. Some New Mexicans still prefer the spelling Alburquerque, For example the book by that name by Rudolfo Anaya. In the 1990s, the Central Avenue Trolley Buses were emblazoned with the name Alburquerque (with two "r"s) in honor of the city's historic name.

ABQ can have all the history it wants, but it doesnt change the fact that its about the ugliest-named city in the US.

Then why do you come to New Mexico when all you do is talk trash about it?.. Obviously the 528,000 people that live here love it,..
If you think its so ugly what would you have named it?

Tamarac, FL. Yuck. I think that's the winner. Elfers, FL is a pretty ugly one too.

Rapid City is named after the rushing Rapid Creek that the city is founded on. People compliment on how the name reflects its rapid growth too. Albuquerque sounds like a man choking while saying "turkey"....
And I'm sure that out of the 528,000 people that live there 1/3 are illegal and the rest don't even know what ABQ means.

While I would agree that Albuquerque is not pretty sounding, at least its name is distinctive and has some history to it as Bradly points out. People who are sure about things are often wrong as DannyBanany is wrong about there being 1/3 population illegals here. People who have weak arguments often resort to vituperative slams like that.
