I'm looking to relocate somewhere with more opportunity than there is now (Pittsburgh). I'm a good 25 years to retiremen?t and my career is slowly dying here in Pittsburgh, due to limited opportunities.
A few years ago, Las Vegas was taking off like a shot. That growth seems to have slowed recently.
I have a college degree and 20 years of work experience. Where could I move and reasonably expect to find a good job within a month (or less)?

Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, Raleigh, Nashville and Washington DC are all great places for finding work and living.
Parts of Florida are still growing quickly, esp. the Tampa-Orlando corridor and it seems Jacksonville is experiencing high growth. TX, GA, and the Carolinas seem to have much better job opportunities than we do however.
Houston would be the safest bet....given the condition of our economy. Any energy related job should be very stable in comparison to other industries. Houston is the fastest growing city in every aspect...you can look at the numbers and they will shock you. Houston has been completely immune (fingers crossed) to this economic hiccup that the country at large is experiencing. Other cities are nice, but Houston is projected to experience this growth for at least 10 years.
by the way....our economy grew by 3.3%...higher than the projected 1.9%. This is wonderful news! I guess we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel now. lets just hope the rest of the world doesnt fall into recession....since our growth came from exports....lack of funds from the rest of the world would cripple our economy.

Reason: economy grew 3.3% for the second quarter of 2008.
San Antonio is also ons of the fastest growing. Bexar county Texas, San Antonio's county seat, was the fastest growing county in Texas in raw numerical gain between 2000-2007. As for the San Antonio-Austin Corridor, the population is fast approaching 4 million in 6 connecting counties. By 2020 the population is projectes to reach upward of 6 million.
According to the census, the fastest growing last year (so they say) are:
Dallas
Atlanta
Phoenix
Houston
Riverside
Charlotte
Chicago
Austin
Las Vegas
San Antonio
Those grew by the most people...
Not so fast. Some of those (like Chicago) actually saw more people moving out than moving in. They're growing only because of all the babies being born.
The following lists were taken from the US Census.
As far as growth rates, the 10 fastest growing metro areas are:
Palm Coast FL
Saint George UT
Raleigh
Gainesville GA (not FL)
Austin
Myrtle Beach SC
Charlotte
New Orleans
Grand Junction CO
Clarksville TN
In actual numeric growth, the 10 fastest growing metro areas are:
Dallas
Atlanta
Phoenix
Houston
Riverside CA
Charlotte
Chicago
Austin
Las Vegas
San Antonio
In terms of where people are actually moving to, the 10 fastest growing metro areas are:
Atlanta
Phoenix
Dallas
Houston
Charlotte
Austin
Las Vegas
Riverside
Raleigh
Fort Worth

Wow, I didnt realize babies were the root cause for all the new homes, shopping centers, places of business, etc, etc. Kid yourself not, Chicagoland is pushing westward, northwesterly and southwesterly at an alarming pace. You dont see cities jump from 40K to 150K in 10 years by babies being born.
