There's this idea among people the accents are like California everywhere, and culturally everywhere is EXACTLY like Seattle or LA. I don't think this is true, people in Oregon are pretty different than people in California, even if the accent is only a tiny bit different. Utah is funky because of the Mormons. The Southwest has a strong Hispanic influence the Northwest lacks. It's pretty diverse, as diverse as the East, no, but not all the same like some people think.
Chicago and Houston too. Which both are more diverse than San Francisco.
Chicago and Houston are not more diverse than the Bay Area. Sorry.
If you leave the City of San Francisco, you can drive 50 miles Northeast(on the 80 Freeway), 50 miles Southeast( on the 880 Freeway) and 50 miles South(on the 101 Freeway) and in all 3 directions, you have 50 miles urban and suburban development with NO RACIAL OR ETHNIC MAJORITY.
I've been to Houston and Chicago, they have a lot of diversity, true. But The Bay Area is just more so.

The only thing the bay area really beats Houston and Chicago in when it comes to diversity is Asians.
In non-SoCal areas, there may be lots of diversity but you can go thru day-to-day life without bumping into others. In SoCal, the middle class is really integrated and you have latin/asian/Afr.Am neighbors who shop at your grocery store and attend your church. You don't find that in Philly, for example.
I don't quite get the " Totally lacking diversity, might as well all be LA" option considering LA is one of the most diverse regions and cities in the world, unless you're talking about Louisiana.
Also where is this "idea among people" coming from? Considering you mention just Seattle and LA this just must be some weird Oregonian thing where they obsess over their neighbors to the north and south a little too much.

Chicago 1,702,799, 17.4% of total population
Houston 1,203,430, 21.3% of total population
Actually,
San Jose has a higher percentage of foreign born residents than Los Angeles and San Francisco-Oakland has a higher percentage of foreign born residents than New York.
