I was just wondering. People often say their hometown- and you think they are born there. But I wonder I think it matters more where you spend your formative years

For example say someone is born in Pittsburg, but when they are 8 years old they move to California. To me- I think they would be a Californian.

What do Y'all think?

The formative years are your hometown for sure.

Formative town, I guess, if you have one. I don't.
Other than that, it's where your heart is.

Formative. Birthplace is redundant sometimes.

To the 8 year old it may be a matter of memories before or after. If that person's happiest memories were before the move, then maybe that's his/her "hometown". Or vice-versa. For many, the teen years end up a period of insecurities bad enough to scar one's reflection on it later. But even the bad periods in life are formulative; if things go right, they make you stronger for getting through it.

This is a tough one to answer.

Certainly where you grew up. Who cares where you were born if you moved before you were a few years old?

My best friend was born in New Jersey and then moved when she was 2. No one actually knows that because she doesn't even bother to stick it into conversation, she IS a Michigan girl.

My dad was born in southwestern Iowa and moved to our "hometown" when he was 5. He is 100% an Iowa City guy, doesn't even think about the town he was technically born in and has no memories.

I was born in Medford, Oregon, but never ever lived there (except for a week or two in the hospital immediately after being born). So I'd have to say it's obviously not where you're born.

"Hometown" is very subjective. It's the place you identify with the most or spent the most time. One of the two.
