Maryland is southern. They've got Waffle House, they're below the Mason-Dixon line, in the Civil War, they held were a border state only because DC in enveloped by MD on three sides. I ask people who aren't from Maryland whether or not Maryland is southern, and they say yes, even if they're from NoVA. Even Baltimore, America's "most literate city" advertises itself as "Northern Distinction, Southern Charm".

there are also waffle houses in PA, so i guess PA is southern too. MH was a border state, it wasnt part of the confederacy. the slogan for baltimore, i've been here all my life and i've never ever ever heard that before. and who cares about what NOVA think?? they dont even consider themselves southern, but consider a place farther north than them southern??

actually, michigan and new york dont have waffle house. and most of the chain's locations are in the southeast. obviously that doesnt determine anything about maryland's culture though.

If they don't have Waffle-house (and according to that map they don't) then how come I've seen them in both states? :/
I remember a WH on the way to Ann Arbor from Ohio, and one in western NY.
Maybe they've since shut down? Has been a few years since I'd payed enough attention to spot them.

There are huge examples of how Maryland is southern! For example....um...uh....oh! got one! Southerners breathe air, and so do people in Maryland! Therefore, Maryland is southern! Wowsers!

Maryland is about as southern as Delaware or Missouri which is to say that any "southern" influence is negligible to say the least.
