Many ignorant rightwing conservative Southerners think most Northerners think like that. I think you need to get out more.

Just reading back over the comments, he didn't say "most" - he said "many"....and these seem to be fairly common stereotypes of people in the South with this thread as evidence, so "many" is a pretty accurate description.

It is a case of actual ignorance versus perceived ignorance - and I prefer to be part of the perception rather than part of the reality.

I think the south got so into the prosperity of the way everything WAS that they kept those ways into today and it dosn't match up with todays society. And urban growth wasn't as fast and conjusted like the north was (just like when you go far up into the north where urban areas aren't as common you'll find hicks) and also urban growth and conjustion is how education grew (thats why NJ, NY, CT are all the most educated states) the south didnt rely much on education. But the racist stuff coming from both ways (white and black) is getting real old and sick.

But to set it straight, the south is a very powerful place and there is more regular southners there than they are redneck hillbillies. Its just like what people think of the mobs in NY and Jersey, ppl act as if every italian is a mobster... which is not true AT ALL

The U.S. is so vastly larger (compared to many other countries) that regional difference and separation almost make it like each region is a different "country" in it's own, that those who never visit have certain impressions about that may or may not be true. Let's face it, most of us have not been to France, yet you hear that, "French people have B.O." stuff from so many (when in fact those I've known who have been there didn't seem to smell anything odd).

Stereotypes of different regions here, are about as odd at times, but, the fact is, stereotypes wouldn't exist if there weren't SOME people who actually do act like them. The trick is convincing people that not every breathing person is a stereotype. Come into certain areas of Atlanta and yes, it can be ghetto as all get out. Go 25 miles West of Atlanta to Paulding County and yes, pickup trucks and Rebel Flags are indeed more numerous than in some other areas. But it doesn't mean that everyone is ghetto in the city, or everyone's a redneck in the far burbs - you may just find a slight increase in the number of stereotypes in certain areas as compared with others. The people overall will still be just as varied as everywhere else.

You can't blame Northerners or foreigners for their impressions of the South - they do it here, too. When you say, "West Coast", what do we think of here FIRST? "Hippies that are politically correct, eat granola all day, surf, and say Dude a lot". Now, we KNOW that's not true about most folks there, but we still think it. Think "New York", and most Southerns immediately think "Rude" - but that's far from true. So, it goes on - the only way to get rid of the stereotypes is to TRAVEL.

Let's see...the Civil War ended approx. 144 years ago. We lost, get over it!!! Why are we still debating the whole "North/South" thing? Who cares? There are good/bad, educated/uneducated in all 50 states. It's just the way the world works.

That's true. A superiority complex is never a good thing, unless you're right.
