So do you think that San Diego could grow enough to become the largest city in California, or even pass New York City to become the largest city in the United States, or even the world? Some think that is possible, at least to become the 2nd largest city in the U.S.

I don't think San Diego could ever pass Los Angeles but I can see San Diego outgrow many other cities in the U.S.

Where is San Diego ranked as of now?

Ummm..... No, not likely. Maybe in 100 years, but who knows what everything will be like then. All of San Diego County/Metropolitan Area is still less than the city limits of Los Angeles. When you include the LA Metro it isn't even a contest. Basically, SD would need to triple their current population to match LA city limits population. Considering the SD job market has never paid as high as the LA area makes SD less attractive also for some people.

NYC, well, that is just silly. Over 8 million people live in NYC city limits and San Diego has just above one million. What kind of growth are we talking about???? Maybe if we include the number of sea gulls in SD in the census

Los Angeles already took the Number one spot in Southern California. The two cities are only two hours apart. Even if Los Angeles fell to the ground by an earthquake or fire, it would still manage to regain its position. For example, the fires in both Chicago and San Francisco tore them apart but were able revitalize. San Diego will grow, immensely, but in time and effort.

Well actually it was San Antonio that just passed San Diego in population, and it's pulling away.

Dallas in in line to potentially pass San Diego in the next 1-3 years.

Not sure why someone would think San Diego is in line to possibly pass LA????

LA has been in currently is pulling away from San Diego in population. San Diego is growing, but certainly not as fast as other cities in the country.

As far as NYC....or the World? San Diego's ranking in the world is falling at a fast rate, as are most cities in the country outside a handfull. The rest of the world is growing and catching up to US cities MUCH faster than ours are growing. Ours are growing fast for us, but not for worldwide stats.
