Thought this would be interesting thread. Are basements common in your part of the country?

Where I'm at in Raleigh-Durham area, they aren't common at all, unlike up north where it seems all the two-story homes have them. I know only a few houses in the area's with basements and most are daylight basements. Most houses around here substitute a basement for a room above the garage called a bonus room.

Nearly every house in NJ has one, I'm sure.

The soil in Houston settles wrong. It's really sandy.

basements are not big anywhere in the South except maybe the older Southern cities like Richmond or Charleston (big maybe though on that one. Don't know for sure). It's usually the attic, which is not big in the North either. I know in DC, it's basements in most homes. But in Houston, it's mostly attics.
