I lived in a suburb of Denver for a while and at the time I did not have a car. I was able to get around with little difficulty using the bus system. That was nearly 20 years ago. I suspect the system they now have is superior to what it was in the early 1990's. Denver gets the nod over Dallas.

Thanks that gives me for some food for thought and help me narrow my search a lot! I like to get a little more feedback in regard to winter weather and buses.

ok, I'll mention it since nobody else did. Both cities aren't great for mass transit but both are improving. Denver has already been talked about but Dallas really has not. While it has a long way to go, it is improving. Currently, they are expanding the existing 45 mile rail to over 90 miles by 2013. Some of the new stations are opening next year.

This is the current map.

This is the new map in 2013.

They also have a decent bus system as well. If you live in Dallas along the rail lines, you may not need a car many times. If you live in North Dallas, I don't think you need it at all. Everything is right there for you either by bus or rail.
