They all have bad parts and some of them have pretty high crime rates, not all of them though.
Add San Francisco. Despite being a great city, it has 92 murders this year within its city limits and it population is only 760,000 residents.
Year to date the other big California city, Los Angeles, has had 265 murders this year within city limits, but has a much larger population of 3,800,000. That works out to a murder rate of 6.5 per 100,000 in LA and about 12.1 per 100,000 in San Francisco. San Francisco has a startling high number of murders for such a small city.
Washington has some cities with high crime rates too.Tacoma,SeaTac,Lakewood, and Kent.Portland and Seattle have also had some bad years where they had pretty high crime rates, though they both had low crime rates for cities of their size last year.
Inspired by the threads about the Midwest and the South, now it's the West Coast. The obvious ones would be Oakland and Compton, CA. The other West Coast cities don't really have much crime.
Oakland is not one dimentional. Yes there is crime, but that doesnt define Oakland to Oaklanders themselves. Statistics cannot truly tell the story of what life there is like because much of the city has very low crime.
Fresno's crime rate has fallen drastically and continues to decline this year. It is now safer than San Francisco, Sacramento, and other cities you left off.
We can use data from many sites but since we are posting on this forum, here are the city-data 2007 crime indexes for some cities.
Fresno 421.6

Portland 497.3
San Francisco 501.2
Sacramento 608.8

Its still consistently had a pretty high crime rate, and in 2007 it had 53 murders which is also a pretty high number. And I know I left some cities off,I wasn't going to name them all at one time.
I have known that for awhile, But any school can be on the Newseeks best schools...or a respectable high school.. i mean the high school i went to had problems but some how managed to be on the list...and somehow a great nationally known high school.
The movie was based on East Palo Alto students, the movie is Dangerous Minds.
That movie is based on Carlmont High School in Belmont, CA. It doesn't serve any students living in Palo Alto, but does serve Belmont, San Carlos, East Palo Alto, Redwood City, and San Mateo. I don't doubt there were problems at this school. The city of East Palo Alto is one of the rougher areas in the Bay Area.
