Looking for a lake in the Eastern Coastal region. We are comparing it to Lake Norman in North Carolina. We like this lake because it is within 1 hour of a major city and has power boats allowed and good schools around it. We just don't want to move that far from family. We are looking in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and New York state. And as far south as Northern Virginia. Any help would be appreciated.

The only real lake in Connecticut is a man made lake called Candlewood in the SW area of the state. It's only a few square miles in size. I am not familiar with Lake Norman but I suspect it is much larger than any in Connecticut. Oneida near Syracuse, NY might be a good choice. I think they allow motor boats.

Thanks, Candlewood did come up when I was doing my search. It looks like a nice area, but maybe a lot of second homes in the area?

It's not on your list, but the best lakes in the Northeast are in New Hampshire.

Also, the Hudson River is not a lake, but it's very beautiful and offers a lot of recreational activities.

Greenwood Lake in Orange County, NY is very nice. It's on the NY-NJ border, about 40 miles from NYC. It's large, allows motor boats, and is surrounded by green hills and mountains. There are lots of full-time residents. It's not a weekend destination lake only. Here's the website for the Village of Greenwood Lake, NY. Greenwood Lake NY | Your Gateway to Good Food, Friends & Adventure in the Hudson Valley

There are many wonderful lakes farther away from cities, such as Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos, the Finger Lakes, Lake George, etc. The areas around them are rural and the lakes attract lots of weekend visitors during the summer.

The Hudson is a great water body too. It actually qualifies as a fjord. As far north as West Point it is 175 feet deep! It is also tidal as far north as Troy (150 miles upriver).
