There is also a lot of unreported ancestry. Many Southerners have been here for a long time and don't know/never bothered to look up their family name's origin.

Obviously the largest cities and states in the country will have the most. Based on percentages the Apapalachians would have the most...many Scots-Irish settled in the Upper South. Also Northern New England has many people of Scottish ancestry and of course French Canadian up there too.

We are all here in the mountains of North Carolina. We have the Highland
Games at Grandfather Mountain every year. Go to Grandfather Mountain Highland Games Homepage and you will see what it is about. Most natives are Scotch Irish that came here in the 1700's and even earlier. Come on over and visit us, you will feel right at home.

For whatever reason, people in the South who list their ethnicity as "American" are usually Scots-Irish.
Also, many Scots have been here for so long and intermarried with the Welsh and the English, that one could describe them as "British" in an ethnic, if not a political sense.
