A three-day weekend getaway, I always want to go up to Park City, Heber City, drive through Parley's Canyon, up Millcreek Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon, American Fork Canyon, through Provo Canyon, such spectacular scenery, check out Sundance, drive the beautiful Aspen-filled Alpine Loop, stay at Snowbird at the Cliff Lodge, or in Park City, check out Deer Valley, or spend all day in the High Uintahs sitting by a lake as my family fishes. Basically, just hang out in the spectacularly beautiful Utah Rocky Mountains which are just minutes from where I live.

This is just what I like to do most, but it seems people are listing everything to do within three hours of where they live.

Within 3 hours of Jersey City?

Catskills, Berkshires, Poconos, even the southern Adirondacks (I drive fast), Saratoga Springs
Jersey Shore, Long Island beaches (I love Montauk), Connecticut and Rhode Island, Delaware beaches
Philadelphia, New York City, Baltimore, Providence, DC (If I'm lucky), Atlantic City (hope I am lucky!). I made it to Boston in 3 hours once.

LA area residents love to go to:

San Diego
Palm Springs/Desert Resorts
Catalina Island
Las Vegas
San Francisco/ Bay Area
Colorado River/Lake Havasu
Mammoth Mountain
Big Bear area mountain resorts
Big Sur/Central Coast

-Those are probably the most popular places people go for three day weekends in no particular order.

From Portland (Oregon) it's to the coast, or Multnomah Falls (ONLY during the summer for me!), maybe eastern Oregon. Can make it to Seattle in that time-frame but I never want to never go there.

However, I rarely want to leave town for 3-day weekends. All that does is make the time shoot by like a bullet, so I prefer to stick around and relax.

From Seattle, Vancouver B.C. and Portland, OR are both within 2-3 hour drives. A little closer to home there are the San Juan Islands, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, Deception Pass....I don't get out enough.

For a 2-3 hour DRIVE from San Diego you could go to:

Los Angeles
Orange County/Disneyland
Santa Catalina Island
Big Bear Lake/Lake Arrowhead for skiing, hiking, camping, or anything else you can do in the mountains. Or you can just go to the local mountains in San Diego County too.
Anza Boreggo Desert
Palm Springs
Baja California like Ensenada, Rosarito, etc...

If you drive about 4-4.5 hours you can also get to Santa Barbara or Las Vegas. Many people take weekend trips to the SF Bay Area but usually fly if they do that.

If it's summer though I just stay in SD so I can enjoy the warmer ocean water before it gets cold again in late fall/winter.

From where I live, 2-3 hours would get me:
Yosemite National Park
Kings Canyon National Park
Lassen Volcanic National Park
Sequoia National Park
Golden Gate National Recreation Area
Point Reyes National Sea Shore
San Francisco
Half-Moon Bay
Santa Cruz
Carson City
Mt. Shasta (okay, so maybe 3.5 hours)
and most importantly, the Sierra Nevada Brewery/Restaurant
