I don't think people hate Maryland. It's Baltimore that's disliked. Having been there, I am so shocked and saddened for the true citizens of Baltimore that are normal everyday people just striving to live a clean life and provide for their families. It's those damn thugs that have basically taken over everywhere outside of downtown Baltimore that has just destroyed the city.

Well, it is beautiful in Maryland but there are some downsides....and since you're asking, here's what I tell you. Some of it's downsides are that it's very over populated (DC metro area), high cost of living, over taxed, and a lot of what once was nice rural landscaped is being taken over by shopping centers and houses.
I think most of the dislike stems as mentioned from the areas around DC (PG County) as well as much of Baltimore and my personal least favorite of Columbia. There are some beautiful areas that many are unfamiliar with which include for me the Eastern Shore towns of St Michaels, Easton and Cambridge as well as the western side of the state in/around places like Frederick and Cumberland.
I didn't know, nor do I think now, that Maryland is hated.
I grew up in Maryland for 18 years and it's a fine place to live. Moved to Florida for the weather but in terms of education and infrastucture, Maryland is heads above Florida in that respect.
Baltimore is bashed by some by falsely negative portrayals. Don't get me wrong, "The Wire" is arguably the best television show ever created and one of my all time favorites. And while it is very realistic as to certain portions of the city, it isn't supposed to be representative of the city as a whole (nor was it ever intended to be).
Baltimore is actually a terrific city with a lot of culture and nice neighborhoods. I prefer it heartily over DC, which I never had much of an attraction to.

Not everywhere outside of downtown. There are still plenty of safe, friendly neighborhoods all around Baltimore. Canton, Fells Point, Federal Hill (well that's sort of downtown), Charles Village, Guilford, Roland Park. Like every city, it has its good and its bad neighborhoods.
You won't dislike Maryland if you can afford to live in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, Rockville or even the better parts of Silver Spring. In fact, you'll like it very much. ;-)
Simply put, people "hate" Maryland because it's become one of the most expensive states to live in.

I can't imagine hating Maryland. Maybe this is just the degenerate alcoholic in me speaking, but seeing a drivethru liquor store in Maryland was one of the few times in my life such a seedy place has ever moved me to tears.
It felt like civilization. Sod off, ABC stores and dry counties.
