Actually, the Washington Post wrote a nice, complimentary article on Birmingham:

Tuning In to Birmingham - washingtonpost.com

Like golf? Here's what the New York Times had to say:

Robert Jones Golf Trail in Birmingham, Alabama, USA - TravelGator

Here's something else:

Birmingham, AL - Time Out New York

We were really surprised at all the things to do here. We tell our single friends that if you're bored in the 'ham, then you're really not trying.

It might be too late for the fall colors in Raleigh, but maybe not...? UNC and Duke are very nice. But they have that fake "carolina style" BBQ out there, though...don't know if you can trust it.
The leaves are starting to turn here, which is the normal time for them to do so. The mountain trees tend to change a little faster and earlier due to cooler weather. The BBQ depends on one's taste buds.

I say "innie, minnie, mienie moe"; just pick one. Polling for opinions on where to go on vacation on the internet can end up in a wash or you can be led to choose a place that you might not like by an overzealous persuader.

I would choose Raleigh. I believe that Barney worked there for awhile and Andy gave it serious consideration. If I remember, it had more things to do but also more crime.
