Actually, the New York Metropolitan area has more million dollar homes, not to mention far more wealthy residents than any other area in this country.
New York County = just Manhattan...so you need to add up Bergen County, Westchester, Fairfax County, Long Island counties, Queens etc. which all belong in "NYC" because of New York's unique geographical setting. Counties like Fairfax County and Bergen are all considered suburbs of NYC just as Beverly Hills is not technically part of Los Angeles but it is still considered Los Angeles.
If you add all the suburbs of New York City from that list, "NYC" has 278,409 million dollar homes...but I do find it interesting that the small island of Manhattan with less than 1.5 million residents has 35% of the entire amount of million dollar home as the entire Los Angeles CSA.

Actually NY has more than 278,409. NY has 314,230. That's a huge amount. Please be proud of yourselves.
However, it just so happens that Los Angeles has 337,651

You also need to take into account that most New Yorkers rent... Including the rich. Many of our athletes rent apartments, celebrities, politicians, executives, stock brokers, etc.
New York is a renting city.
I would still think that rental units, if they have over a million dollar market value as many NYC properties do, count as "housing units" for purposes of this study.

Thanks again. Great data!
Something like this...'value of owner occupied housing units'-near the bottom third of the list.
