California. Its the 9th largest economy in the world already. But why would any state want to go it alone?

Florida, Texas, California. Large populations, large economies, significant uniqueness from one side of the state to the next.

The only states that could be their own country are California and Texas. They are both very large states with multiple large cities and the geography is very different depending on what area of the state you are in. The climate can be very different as well. It can be snowing in one region of the state and be very hot in another area of the state. One area can be a large desert and the other a large forest.

New York as well and it has a variety of physical features. Has NYC, the Adirondacks and Catskills, Long Island, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, has shorelines of Lakes Erie and Ontario, the Atlantic Ocean, the Hudson River, 1000 Islands, etc..... Has a diverse history, educational experiences, people, cultures, economies, social ways of life and so on. All of this within a state of 19 million+.

California and Texas. This is unfair to smaller states here in the East, though.

I think the Northeast could form a very powerful country on it's own that would clobber California and Texas.

Yes, Niagara Falls is a major source of power. I read somewhere that Niagara Falls is a major terrorist target because if they could find a way to shut it down, power would be out all over the North and East Coast. Plus, New York State is known for its apples and milk. The best milk flavors in the world are made here. Intense Chocolate Milk by Upstate Farms is THE BEST chocolate milk I've ever had. It is truly intense chocolate milk.

NYC is a given. Without NYC, this country wouldn't be nearly as powerful. Long Island is known for its wine.

People underestimate New York State. They don't realize that there's more to New York than NYC. But we're pretty small to be our own country.
