I don't know why you're limited to only those two particular municipalities. Actually of the two Rancho Cucamonga (I'm assuming that's what you mean by "Rancho") is probably the nicer one. Avondale is the kind of place where you can buy a new or fairly new home for very cheap, but it's a lower class area that in short time (if it hasn't already happened) will turn into a complete ghetto, just like the lousy parts of the west valley (Maryvale, etc) of the Phoenix area that it borders. The air pollution in the IE is attrocious. You can be up in the San Gabriel mountains in a matter of no time there, but the smog backs right up to the mountains which ruins it. Phoenix isn't good either, but it's definitely cleaner than the IE. Unfortunately though within Phoenix, the southwest valley which includes Avondale has some of the worst dust pollution. They're both bad choices, IMO. Even when it comes to cheap outlying suburbs in Phoenix there are better options-- Surprise and Gilbert for example.
