Although Baltimore's rate is still to high to my liking, we are right now way down from previous years to the lowest amount of homicides since 1970. I hope that rate continues to decline. A number of cities do not publish their stats. But, from those that do, New Orleans and St Louis seem to be the highest per capita.

Actually the murder rate has been steadily going down since 1993. Last year the murder rate at the end of the year was 53% lower than it had been in the 90's.
So even though the rate is up 15% compared to last year (the lowest since the 1960s), we're still actually doing much better than just 4 years ago. Still, obviously, the number of murders here is absolutely horrid. I feel bad for people living in those neighborhoods on the south and west side that see a Lion's share of our crime.
The violent crime rate is up a little over 3% for the year and the property crime rate is up 3.7%. Those numbers are still some 40-60% off our high points in the 90's.
San Francisco had 97 murders in 2008. Oakland had 123 murders.

But murders rose about 5 percent, to an unofficial total of 523 last year compared with 496 in 2007. There also were more victims of shootings - 1,781 through Dec. 28 compared with 1,708 in 2007 - and more shootings, 1,499 through Dec. 28 compared with 1,432 the previous year.
At the same time, gun arrests were down 12.9 percent, to 3,079 last year from 3,537 in 2007. And drug arrests in 2008 declined 7.5 percent, to 64,352 from 69,628 in 2007.
