I left at 17 to go off to college a couple hours away in the same state.

Just move to Scranton. We're close enough to meeting that criteria judging by the amount of presidential campaign visits we've been getting as of late. Giuliani was here yesterday. Kennedy will be here today or tomorrow. McCain is coming tomorrow. It's amazing! Scranton is apparently the new "bell weather" for middle-class blue-collar America!

ScranBarre I think you may be a bit confused in more ways than one. But that's beside the point.
I was 16 when I left home and it wasn't by choice.

I graduated when I was 17 and left home a month later when I turned 18. I moved into a motel across the river. I had a good job making minimum wage which was $1.60 an hour. The company pickup was a perk as my personal vehicle and I had their credit card for gas. Later I got an apt. with a couple other guys and 6 months after that moved to Kansas City to attend an airline school.

The way things were at the time there was no use starting college. I got drafted while I was out there. I sure missed my minimum wage job because the army paid us $90 a month. That rose to $265 a month in Vietnam.

I left home at 16 for college, but it wasn't until I finished my studies at 23 that I became financially independent.

Well, for the people that posted, this is encouraging. I'm guessing everyone else who didn't post is close to 30 and still living with mom and dad.

Grew up in San Francisco and moved out of my mother's house almost as soon as I turned 18 and was legally of age to do what I wanted. Gee's poor woman, (my mother) she put Attila the Hun to shame.
She was pulling my hair and punching me the day I left, trying to make me stay. Good thinking, pull someones hair so they will want to stay. lol. Moved to Reno after that. Was happy as heck there. Maybe cause I was away from Attila.

I had just turned 17, left home with my boyfriend and moved from a small town to Charlotte NC...only 40 miles away.
