Of course, without New York City for the bureaucrats in Albany to bleed of its enormous tax base, you can count on either a drastic reduction in services all throughout what remains of New York State...or a huge increase in taxes. Here in the city, we'll be watching you squirm. And then when you generously offer to take us back, all eight million of us will give you the finger at the same time. (Oh, sorry...it won't be "the city" any more. It'll be the state of New Amsterdam. And when you've also lost a proportional amount of electoral votes, it will be amusing to see how unimportant your state becomes in the next presidential election!)

It's you that need us, not the other way around.

Talking It Will Always Be "THE CITY"

It is simply amazing how people think the State of NY could not survive without NYC......Long Island wants to succeed from NYS to get away from the taxes....Staten Island wants to succeed from the other 5 boros to get away from "The City"...there was talk of Queens wanting to succeed also......

TAKE a look at your monthly bills....everyone in the 8 counties surrounding NYC gets taxed 1/4 % tax on everything they buy that goes to NYC......then there is your phone bill that has a NYC "911" surcharge in it spread throughout the state......as well as many other hidden taxes......Not to mention the every so popular Lottery System that puts the first 20 Million into the schools and the rest into the General Budget...so letting NYC form it's own state as well as Staten Island/Queens/Long Island...would not be such a bad thing...

Back in the 70's when "The City" had layoffs......the Welfare and Welfare related expenses was almost 70% of "The City" budget......so who will be making up the difference when the city gets the chance to leave....

I would add it, but I can't find a way to edit the poll.

Don't know about the rest, but this part is wrong.

Right now NYS is very unimportant, solid democrat.

If Upstate NYS was it's own state, it'd have 10-12 electoral votes, and would probably be a swing state, an important one too.
