How would I go about taking over an abandoned farm for 1 year? Is squatters rights real? Ive got plenty of camping experience and would document the whole thing. Ive made a bet I fear I can't prove. Somewhere in the southwest region would be preferred.

I plan on raising chickens and growing enough vegetables for myself and possibly a friend.

Im not looking to start a large operation. Only to live off the grid for a while.

There are lots of abandoned places in the Great Plains. In fact, some cities are offering free houses to people who will come and populate.

And chickens are pretty easy to raise. I listened to a guy talk about how he gave his two sons twenty chickens apiece a few years ago as their side business. Evidently, the boys made enough money off the eggs and chickens to put themselves through college.

At the risk of hopelessly simplifying, I think you need seed, chicken wire, and a shotgun for pest control. Plus the creature comforts you'll need. I think investing in some solar panels would be a good idea. And a kerosene heater.

Interesting idea. I would not suggest the southwest though (do you mean the desert southwest, a la Arizona)? Somewhere in the Great Plains might work.
