I spent a few days inside the USAA building in San Antonio one weekend back in the 1980's.
It didn't seem to be really that large of a building. It's like someone took a New York city sky-scraper and laid it on it's side. If I recall correctly, it was only 5 or 8 stories above ground, with another 3 stories below ground. Runs for about 2000 feet in length. A huge canyon of an atrium runs down the middle of the building.

This is a list of largest buildings by floor area in the United States that I compiled from Wikipedia. I had to find the information on the USAA building from another site. - The Palazzo in Las Vegas is 6.9 million square feet
- The Pentagon is 6.6 million square feet
- The Magnuson Health Sciences Building in Seattle is 5.7 million square feet
- The Renaissance Center in Detroit is 5.5 million square feet
- The USAA Building in San Antonio is 4.6 million square feet
- The Sears Tower in Chicago is 4.5 million square feet
- The Chrysler Tech Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan is 4.4 million square feet.
- The Boeing Plant in Everett, Washington is 4.3 million square feet.
- Merchandise Mart in Chicago is 4 million square feet.
For those keeping score, there are five buildings outside of the U.S. that are larger than the Palazzo.
