What are the troublesome insects in places where you live or have lived, and how much of a problem are they?
I myself do not consider bugs to be that much of a problem. The worst place is Missouri, where chiggers are everywhere that there is grass, and ticks are widespread and varied. But flying insects are no worse than anywhere else.
Mosquitoes are virtually non-existent west of the Rockies, however there are a few pockets of them. Mosquitoes are worst near water. There are many different regional species of mosquitoes, each one having its own particular torture.
The north woods has some nasty fellows, like black-flies and deer-flies, but they tend to be localized.
Last summer, I tried to sleep in my car in the WalMart parking lot in Arkadelphis, Arkansas, and also at a truck stop near Caruthersville, Missouri, and I was driven sleepless by some tiny little gnats. I had never experienced those before, so it might have just been a bad hatch of them. I sleep in my car a lot, and 95% of the time, I am not bothered by anything. Except the police.
I limited my Missouri comment to chiggers and ticks. Chiggers occur over a very small part of the US, and Missouri is the epicenter for the worst of them, along with eastern Kansas. There is no place where more ticks will magnetically attract to you wherever you walk in contact with wild vegetation. Aside from chiggers and ticks, Missouri offers no particular problems, except that it also the only state within the natural ragne of all three classes of venonous snakes and both kinds of poisonous spiders, but they are rarely encountered. It is, nevertheless, high on my list of favorite states.
I heard a news report about a guy who escaped from jail in Missouri and after a few of days hiding out, he turned himself in because he couldn't stand the chiggers, and had to be medically treated for them. The medical officer at Fort Riley Kansas told me their biggest case load is new recruits who have never heard of chiggers until their first day on manouvers.
I guess it depends on where you go. I go on nature hikes sometimes and I don't think I've gotten a chigger or a tick in years. I've never seen a black widow or a recluse in the wild. I know people who have been bitten by recluses, but it can certainly be treated.
