Here's a link for you that has the Combined Statistical Areas in the nation. It is Wikipedia so take the resukts with a grain of salt, or however the saying goes.
I must agree that I have not been to Oakland. But I hear more about San Francisco considering world class cities (according to Lorobough University or however you spell it). But I guess perhaps San Francisco-Oakland could be similiar to metro areas of Minneapolis-St.Paul. We have the Triangle and Triad similiar to those in Minnesota and California as far as metro identity. Would you say Oakland competes with San Fran or is it a partnership between the two cities? Just wondering.
I'd call it more of a partnership, if anything. I don't sense any direct competition.
I understand. What about San Jose? Is it aoart of the CSA or tis it too far away?
It is part of the CSA but not the MSA. The difference between those classifications seems insignificant. The region is basically polycentric. Each node of course carries different weight in various categories, though.
Wow...the first thing I noticed about those pictures is that there are hardly any people on the streets!
Just head to the bazillion big-box stores on the outskirts of town where you'll see five or six lanes of bumper-to-bumper traffic while new downtown merchants and restaurants struggle to keep afloat. Lemmings, lemmings, lemmings...
I would say this is accurate. The list of all metropolitan areas. MSAs. Then there is like metro areas like San Luis Obispo-Santa Maria and Fresno-Clovis.

Being next to San Francisco is more of a bonus than a necessity.
there is a list of combined statistical areas as well...

Louisville has its urban parts--Old Louisville, Portland, Crescent Hill, Clifton, the South Brownsboro corridor, and especially the Highlands.
Don't forget about the old, dense, once-thriving downtown constructs of Covington and Newport in northern Ky.
As for Lafayette, you must mean Lexington, which is in Fayette County. Lexington is one sprawling suburb. Period. Not a single definitive true urban or urban-feeling area. Same goes for Bowling Green, Independence, Owensboro, Richmond, and other regional centers in the state--small downtowns but almost entirely gradual outward late-20th century development.
