I hope lots of people answer this one... I would like to get a good idea of how much average 2-bedroom apartments and/or 2-bedroom starter homes cost in the SAFE areas of cities, coast to coast! I'm just looking for average prices in average areas... not the slums and not the ritzy part either! Sure, I could spend hours looking through craigslist ads and never really know if what seems like a good deal is really in an unsafe area... or I could ask the people who really live there!

I'll start:

City: Dayton, OH
2bd Apt: $600
Starter home: $75,000

San Francisco's median listing price for a 2bd for the week ending Nov 19, 2008 was $880,924. Id guess a 'starter' listing(not in the ghetto as you requested) would be around $600,000?

Holy S*it, the cost of living index versus income disparities between SF and other Midwestern towns can’t be on par with each other.

Meaning, I doubt salaries actually make up for cost of living increase in SF.

Where I live a 2bd starter home in a nice area would be around 80-110K. That is crazy...I just don’t see how anyone could justify 800K for a 2bd home.
Granted, Omaha isn't exactly a "hot spot or destination city" but still.

I've spent some time in Sacramento and loved it. From everything I hear SF is much nicer and if they don't have the temp extremes I could see why poeple would choose to live there. (800k for 2bd, idk about that, though)

Maybe I should visit sometime, if I ever get away from the office.

Depending on the amount of land you want with it a little 2 bedroom starter can go for as low as $25k to as high as $300k around here. Of course the high priced ones you average 80+ acres of land and usually waterfront. Average for a small 2 bedroom in town nice neighborhood is around $80k. I know one right now that is going for $23k that is a great neighborhood, close to schools, very quiet part of town, but no more than 4 blocks away from downtown and everything else. Decent sized yard, not big but not tiny either, 60X120 lot. The elderly owner went into long term care and the family just wants to sell the house because they all live in other areas now.

Not too many apartments around, but you can rent a 3 bedroom house in the country for around $800 a month, or a 3 bedroom in town for around $650.

That's the average price in Manhattan. You can find a 2-bedroom for less, but it is stupendously expensive. It's really hard to live here if you don't make a huge amount of money.
