Before kids, I strongly preferred urban. With a child, suburban is better for me. When I retire I plan on keeping my current house and also having a condo in the city.

I like urban except for the sky high car insurance rates you have to typically pay. I just moved from an urban to suburban setting and saved $67 a MONTH on my car insurance
Definitely suburban. But the suburbs I have lived in have offered great restaurants and things to do, so I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything by not living in the city (except for crime, crowds, expensive everything, no parking, concrete jungle, weird one-way streets, buildings blocking out the sky and sun, etc).
For instance Dallas. If I could live in Dallas right by Dart the Rapid transportation system I would love it. Ofcourse I am someone who loves a great skyline, malls, restaruants, Sports Stadiums & fun things to do. I like being in the Center.

Urban since I'm not married yet and don't have kids. Easier to get around, and it's actually cheaper in NY than Long Island (where I did part of my growing up). When I marry my fiance, we're going to buy a house on Long Island. I miss it there, and the schools in the suburbs are much better. It may be more expensive, but it's worth it.

The great thing about Dallas is that you can have the peace and quiet and amenities of a suburb and be in downtown in less than 20 minutes to enjoy the city, as well. That is what we do!
