That's why I'm leaving CT. Where I'm going, a house like that wouldn't sell for more than $50,000. The city appraisal for my house is $148,500. The highest appraised value was $234,000. The realtors here tell me that city appraisals are on the low end of the appraisal range. But if that is what it takes for me to get out of here, I will take the $148k.

In southern Orange County, CA (draw a line at Irvine; everything south of that) you can't get into an entry level single family home yet (even in this bad real estate market). You need about $450k for an entry level starter home (1,000 sq. ft) in more inland communities and at least $600k at the coast.

For $300k you can get a 1,100 square foot condo with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths built in 1985.

I'm envious of some of you guys. With this recession 300k can now get you a 1 bedroom condo in Brooklyn. Thats why my mom left LI and moved to PA.

If these cheap locations weren't so rural I would give em a shot.

Syracuse isn't rural. I noticed that you have Allentown mentioned as a town you claim. Syracuse is bigger than Allentown and the metros are about the same.
