Atlanta is currently the 9th largest metro with a population of about 5.2 million. Which of the above metros do you think Atlanta could surpass? I think it could move up to 4th or 5th and rival Dallas and Houstons metros, but I don't think it could ever overtake Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York City.

No way could it pass up Houston or Dallas/Ft. Worth. What makes you think that Atlanta could pass up those metros? Did you read somewhere that those two metros were declining in population? Have those metros been hit hard by the economy? Please give us some data to back up your claim.

It may not pass DFW anytime soon, but Houstons it's possible since it only has 400,000 more than Atlanta metro. Remember, we're only talking about possibilities and not likelihoods.

but Houston is not losing population. i could understand your argument if people were fleeing Houston but it seems like the population is growing and the job growth is one of the highest in the country. unless something drastic happens to the Houston economy I see no reason why any metro will pass it up anytime soon. i honestly don't think Atlanta will pass any of those metros on the poll. not because of anything negative having to do with Atlanta, just because the metros on the poll have nothing wrong with them that would make them decline anytime soon.

I say Atlanta passes up Miami and Washington DC as they aren't growing nearly as fast as Atlanta. DFW is growing just as fast as Atlanta, and Houston is not too far behind at all. I should have marked down Philly, too, as Houston will pass Philly soon.

If Dallas and Fort Worth are considered as one metro, then there is no reason not to consider Baltimore as part of DC. Not counting Baltimore and DC together is like not considering San Jose as part of the SF metro.

The DC/Baltimore CSA metro in 2006 was 8.2 million. So in terms of CSA metro size, Atlanta has a long way to go before it surpasses DC.

Nope. Dallas and Fort Worth are only 10 minutes apart. From Downtown to Downtown, they are about 30 minutes apart. A lot different than DC/Baltimore and San Jose/SF, but more like the Twin Cities. You should probably take it up with the Census.

MSA designations dont accurately quantify how large an area is. DC and SF are perfect examples of this.

It's all about commuting patterns though. That's how these areas are designated.

San Francisco to San Jose is completely built up for the entire 50-mile drive and the average density for the entire drive is over 5,000 people per square mile.

The reason why they arent combined is because the San Francisco Peninsula is a narrown strip of land and most people live on a narrow sliver. In order for consolidation, there has to be a 3 mile overlap between the 2 metros and its 2.7 Miles because of a large office park at the Menlo Park(SF) and Palo Alto(SJ).

Interesting really. But very odd at the same time.
