Which is better: Safe but expensive, or affordable but dangerous
Every city has its problems. Some struggle with high crime rates, while some struggle with lack of affordable housing and other costs. Usually, a city wouldn't have both problems, with maybe a few exceptions. For example, cities like Detroit or Atlanta are affordable cities to live in, but have high crime rates. On the other hand, San Diego is a safe peaceful city with almost no crime, but very expensive. Japan is also very safe but expensive, and even though its a different country it fits the example.

Well being that I am only 18 going on 19, I would prefer cheap but dangerous. It depends what you can afford though and what you consider dangerous.

I would prefer a low cost of living with a high crime rate. I do not mean to say that I would rather live in a city such as Detroit, but if it was Philly vs. New York, or Chicago vs. New York or LA vs. Miami, I would go with Philly, Chicago, or Miami because, despite them having a higher crime rate, are more managable and livable.
High crime is usually in the eye of the beholder and, if you are careful, no matter where you are, you usually are fine.

I would prefer to live in Atlanta, but stay in the good neighborhoods in the north and east part of the city, which are still affordable. San Diego on the other hand is safe, but it has other problems besides the cost of living which makes it not worth the COL.

Most dangerous places have plenty of nicer parts, where you have nothing to worry about.

Safe or dangerous are kind of relative terms. And a safe place in St. Louis won't cost near as much as a dangerous part of LA or New York.

Cities like Topeka,, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, San Antonio, Austin, Lincoln, Wichita, Boise, etc all have low murder rates and all have affordable housing. So you can have your cake and eat it too in this case. None of those cities are what people from the hood would call hardcore thugged out gangsta cities.
