Honestly, I'd have my primary home be a penthouse on Manhattan's Upper West Side, specifically Central Park West with panoramic views of everything around in all directions. My second home would be a house (mansion) on or across from the beach somewhere on the Jersey Shore - Mantoloking, Bay Head, Deal, somewhere upscale like those, or a Victorian in charming Cape May.
So what cities or places in the USA will you want to have two homes. I will live full time in Manhattan, Upper West Side Or upper East side apartment and have a second home somewhere in San Francisco. Probably in Russian Hill or Nob Hill.
Well, I would buy about 500 acres in the same area I live in now and build a completely self-sufficient house. My second house would be on the Texas Gulf Coast. Probably around Port O'Connor or Sargents. On the water.
If it were up to me, our primary home would be a spread in Northern Michigan. Somewhere around Petoskey or Charlevoix. If it were up to my husband, we'd have a massive ranch here in Western Montana.
We'd probably agree on a vacation home in Hawaii. I'm not sure which island but not Oahu. Not only is it a beautiful, tropical location but we could visit my sister in Honolulu.
I'd have one penthouse on top floor in some major city, like LA or NY. I have no real preference which coast. I probably wouldn't stay very long, but I could rent it out when not using it... My second home would be a beach house. It would be some place warm year round and I would rather deal with earthquakes than hurricanes. I wouldn't mind having my own island. The third house would be a cabin in the woods. Seclusion would be more important than size. It wouldn't hurt to have a nice view, but I don't want to be found there. Having too good of a view means people can see you. The Rockies, Sierra Nevadas, Appalachians - any place sufficiently secluded. I don't fish, but a lake would be nice for swimming, etc.
If I could have a huge sea-faring yacht, I may trade that for a house. I just don't know if I get seasick or not. As soon as they invent air yachts and space yachts I'm all in.
Another type of house that intrigues me is a large brownstone. I just don't like the idea of sharing walls with neighbors and having a skinny backyard.
A couple dozen acres with vineyard and small lake in either Sonoma; Glen Ellen or Healdsburg, or, Santa Lucia Preserve (Central Coast- either area is just, "God's Country" beautiful) with a beautiful crafted Italian Farmhouse compound and then a decent sized apartment with terrace(s) in a grand pre-war apartment building in NYC, UES.
