More impressive than I thought: Oakland, CA. You hear so many negative things about this place, but it was much nicer than I thought it would be.
Worse than I thought: Tie between Detroit and Philly. I mean, come on folks, soap, water, ajax, sumtin!!!! And if it falls on the ground, pick it up, please. One word for both places...Wow!!!

NYC was more amazing than I expected. I expected SLC to be a small boring rural place but it was actually very hip, modern, and interesting. Also very unique.
I always thought LA is worse than you'd expect. I also expected a lot from Toronto because I love Vancouver, but it was way different.

Most people are seriously surprised by Salt Lake City. I met someone at a convention in L.A. once. When he asked me where I was from, and I said, "Salt Lake City," he said, "Hmmm... armpit of the earth." Without even stopping to think, I said, "You've never been there, have you?" He looked surprised and said, "Well, no. How did you know?" I answered, "Because no one who has ever been there would say that."
I thought Oklahoma City was more impressive upon visiting. I suppose that's not difficult when one's impression of OKC usually comes from the Weather Channel. The airport was well laid out, Bricktown was nice although more money than culture oriented, my first time was not long after the bombing and I didn't realize from the news how large an area was affected so that was impressive too in a way but also that there was rebuilding and not just total abandonment.
Milwaukee has some extraordinary older city neighborhoods that are quite affordable, and some areas along the shore of Lake Michigan that offer views that rival any here in Boston. Great restaurants, including the world-famous Mader's, too.

San Antonio- I've been told by so many people that SA is so beautiful, but it just dosent impress me at all.
First I'll start with the worst. I thought Jacksonville was going to be a nice city. It was so dull, boring, lifeless. For a city of 700,000, there downtown was awful. I've seen cities with fifty thousand have a nicer downtown. There was no one walking around. Public transport sucked. The weather was so humid, (that I knew about though). It just did not impress me at all.
The city that exceeded my expectations would have to be NY. From my first time there many years ago, I still say wow when I go there. As much as you see it in films or whatever, there is still no other city in the world that makes me giddy with amazement as NY does. NY truly is worth the hype.
