How come college football is not as big in the Northeast/New England as the rest of the country??? (cities, mayor)

It's close enough, considering that it is an hour south of Pittsburgh and WV has a character that varies depending upon where in the state you are.
I have NEVER heard West Virginia included as part of the Northeast...it's solidly a southern state - both in character and in location. I realize it has a border with PA, but borders don't define an area. If that were true, than Texas must be part of Mexico?

West Virginia Wiki Page----
The Census Bureau considers West Virginia part of the South, as most of the state is south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The northern panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio with the West Virginia cities of Wheeling and Weirton being just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, while Bluefield is less than 70 miles (110 km) from North Carolina and Harper's Ferry is considered to be a part of the Washington metropolitan area. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in a wide variety of geographical regions, including the Upland South, the Southeastern United States and often the Northeastern United States. Notably, it is the only state which entirely lies within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission, which is a common definition of "Appalachia".[4] For these reasons, West Virginia is often considered simultaneously the northernmost Southeastern state, the southernmost Northeastern state, the westernmost Mid-Atlantic state and the easternmost Midwestern state
I would say Maryland, and the mid-Atlantic, should be classified as the northeast. The northeast = New England + mid-Atlantic. Maryland is sometimes grouped with southern states, but I don't see how most of the state has much in common with anything south of the DC metro.
WV is considered south by the census, but it's really an outlier that is wholly Appalachian in character. On occasion I have seen WV grouped in with the mid-Atlantic though.
PA is a definite northeastern state where football is a big deal.
