The only important thing you listed is gasoline. So in all honesty, Houston is the most important city of the 3. They're the reason you can get to work and back, they have the largest port in the country, and the 2nd most Fortune 500 companies. Move over, LA. Houston doesn't need LA or SF. As a matter of fact, none of us do if all you could think of are iPods and movies as the largest industries there.
Actually Sumner Redstone of Boston owns MTV as a part of Viacom.
As well as Dreamworks and Paramount.

Neither of those companies are HQed out of Houston either.

But Houston is still the center of the Energy Industry.

Finance=Wall Street
Technology=Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley is the only one that people don't absolutely HATE right now because the region's goals dont revolve around greed but rather innovation.

This is where the execs in the business live, work, and play.
Yes, Houston is where the best and the brightest in the energy industry are located.
