There might be 3 of them. They could use another one by the mall which has a lot of traffic in and out. It seems like they need one by the mall more than the places where the stoplights are now.

Zillions. And, I might add, every single one is out of sync.

In Chicago it's not about how many lights you have it's about how many cameras you have making sure you don't run the light

I found some interesting stats on the City of Chicago:

3,800 miles of streets

26,000 intersections

over 2,900 signalized intersections

24 signal interconnects containing 480 signals

140,000 traffic crashes per year

over 1,000,000 estimated vehicles in the streets each day

2,017 city buses on 152 routes covering 2,273 route miles

around 190,000 bus miles each day

Most intersections have 3 distinct lights for each direction of traffic, or 12 lights per intersection. Of course this varies, some only have 2 lights for each direction, some have many more.

If you go with 12, than there are roughly 34,800 traffic lights in the city.

We mostly have yellow plated traffic lights in my town. Most traffic lights are older with a few newer ones.
