I think it is silly that Yankee is a term of derision in the South. Never really got that before haha. Anyway, I am curious, not trying to start anything and admitting my general ignorance (and apathy, I suppose) about the South right now, but what exactly has the South contributed to the USA that makes it worth a Civil War and the hype and the poverty I've always heard about? Admittedly, I have an inherently negative opinion towards the South because of the racism, the accent, the poverty, the RELIGION, the obesity that seems to be common knowledge up here (Boston, MA) I know that this is wrong but, it just seems like we don't need you guys. That is kind of the opinion I get from friends from all over the country (PA, NY, MA, MN, CT, OH and CA,IL and even Tx for example) I don't know. Enlighten me.

A guy in Boston complaining about the "racist South." Classic!

And by the way, what has New England contributed to the U.S. lately? At least the South has several years worth of population growth and economic expansion to show for it. No one would even blink if New England were to disappear into thin air.

This is by far one of the most asinine posts I've read on here.

Yay flame war!

I'm not even sure what the OP's point is, or if he has one?

Huh?

I'm not from New England (NJ actually), but I would def blink if NE disappeared. As a registered Democrat, I would be very upset. It is a Democratic stronghold & quite important to this countries political landscape.
I'm not from NE, so I will let them get into all the cultural nuances & such.

oh no!

Let me clarify. I am curious about the South and it's contributions and positive aspects. In effect, try and win me over. I've been to the Southern coast(NC, SC) but that is the extent of my knowledge really.

Right now the south seems to be giving millions of Americans the opportunities to get ahead and own a home that is much harder to do in expensive, heavily taxed, bureaucratic states in the Northeast, upper midwest, and CA. They also seem to allow more freedoms from all the BS nanny state laws that seem to be more prevalent in the Northeast and CA. Right now it looks like a great place to do business and to find good affordable places to live. Hopefully the south will learn to manage their growth better than some places like CA b/c if they don't then they'll just end up with the same problems.

Personally I think it is rather pathetic, close minded, and judgmental how snobby people in the Northeast and my home state of CA can be towards the South, I think its a great place that has its problems and its pluses like anywhere else.
