I'm sorry, but Kansas City and St. Louis don't have the exact same rednecks as the other cities you mentioned, and not in nearly as numerous amounts, mainly just because a good deal of them lack a Southern accent, and because Kansas City and St. Louis are Midwestern, not Southern like the other cities you mentioned.

There are rednecks EVERYWHERE. They may not be known as such in different regions (hick, yinzer, etc), but they are there.

I have seen them in places as different from the South as you can get, as in Upstate NY and Washington State. Trust me, they're out there.

I always thought a redneck was somebody that lived in the country or showed characteristics of country life. According to this thread rednecks are whites that have tats, are criminals and can be racist. Now I'm confused.

Please. The midwest has literally tons of rednecks too. A Southern accent does not automatically equate to being a redneck. I've spent enough time in the Midwest to know that rednecks of the Midwest are no less hillbilly because they lack a Southern drawl. A redneck is a redneck regardless of the region they are located in.

Actually the meaning of the term has shifted and changed over the years.

Originally a redneck (and some one may have stated this on this thread before but I just found this) was how middle class and well off town dwellers refered to the country field workers that would come into town. They called them this because in the south the backs of their necks would be sunburned red from them leaning over working in the hot fields all day. It was mostly a derogatory word as some of the more well off towns people looked down on some of these country field workers and their ways.

Now the word has changed to pretty much mean anyone that is low class and backwards in a country way.

Yea but when did it change from a person living in the country, to just about anybody? Doesn't make sense to me. I always thought of it as a term to specifically describe somebody living in a rural setting with certain characteristics.
