Where's Omaha, or Raleigh? or Des Moines?

That's because Omaha has not yet reached the status of a Top 25 city. It is not well rounded in terms of a high overall standard of living. The Places Rated Almanac has it rated around 62nd best metro area in the country. I have to admit I don't think Hartford has yet achieved a Top 25 ranking either though it is well ahead of Omaha in overall standard of living. Places Rated Almanac has it at the 42nd best metro area.

Bear in mind Kiplingers is a Financial publication. I sincerely doubt they can effectively analyze non financial criteria as well as a more unbiased publication can. They may be wowing over the financial growth taking place in the Omaha area but that still does not mean it has a superior quality of life just yet. Essentially Omaha's arts and entertainment cannot match up with larger metro areas. Hartford is taking decent strides at once again becoming an important metro area in this country but it also still has a way to go before it arrives.

A 25 year old needs to be somewhere super-affordable with a good market. But also good nightlife and an attractive singles scene.

I said Houston, Portland, and Austin. Maybe Atlanta.

that was the first thing I noticed, and I'm a horrible speller...
I would say Denver...
Mainly for the fact that it is fairly cheap, unlike the prices of California and the Northeast.
It has the Mountains, and a fairly large growing(?) economy...
I could say NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego, Honolulu (although not listed), and DC...
but those places have a pretty high cost of living...which I assume you intend to include in the factor of the 'live' part in the 'live, work, and play'.
