Particularly in Illinois - it was like the South!!! I went into a wal-mart in the town I was staying in and people spoke with really poor grammar, we even saw some confederate flags
Is Chicago filled with these sorts of ignorant racists, or is it some sort of cultural oasis?

Indiana was simply appalling. No culture whatsoever, very bland.

No, we weren't far from Chicago at the time. I've heard a lot of boosterism of chicago so I was kind of shocked I mean I know nothing matches image (it is murder capital of America after all) but still I would think with 2 decent universities it would be less ignorant in the area.

We saw way more confederate flags through Michigan/Illinois/Indiana than we did in all of TX!!!!! We only saw one there!!

Alot of Hoosiers are southerners who moved north a few generations back. Southern Ill. has more in common with Memphis than Chicago.

Where were you in realtion to Chgo.?
...and most of Michigan is just plain racist. It had more to do with the creation of modern Detroit than any deindustrialization ever could.

You are sooooo right about Indiana...and I'm from here! Which is why I'm trying my best to get out of Indiana & the Midwest altogether!!

We were not in "southern illinois" we were near Pontiac.

Isn't Chicago filled with southerners too I get the impression a lot of types from states like mississippi/alabama move there for the blue collar jobs???

really? i take it you didn't stop at any of the attractions like the Rialto or the casinos. bottomline is unless you are in chicago or naperville or some of those other towns...winter sucks for tourists. try again in the summer. Joliet is a million times better, you can go see the Joliet Jackhammers play or go to the NASCAR track. you just have to accept that up here in the North winter can be a doozy and pretty much puts everything on hold.

did you watch the bears-packers game on monday night? i was there. temps were 2 degrees with a -15 degree wind chill. you can't do a lot in that and most people from texas couldn't last 15 minutes in that weather. see, we get real weather up here in the North. not that sissy stuff you see in Texas.

LOL...im just teasing you but the bottomline is winter sucks for tourist attractions in Illinois and outside of Chicago. and chicago really is a business city first...it's not some play land like LA, Vegas or Miami.
