I figured I would go right to the source of the problem for genuine advice. I have just left Vermont to escape the hoards of hyper suburbanite, Volvo/BMW/Subaru driving, latte drinking, shushi eating trust fund/telecommuter/second home, ex hippie, turned yuppie, turned boomer moving to my formerly safe and sane state. We now have people driving Subarus with 200 liberal bumper stickers going to town meetings to fight harmless windtowers on the mountain so property values won't go down, while acid rain from coal fired energy plants ruins the ridgeline. Social ultra liberals are getting elected and forming comittees to bring enlightenment and social programs to warring Somali refugees, and gang bangers imported from Springfield , MA to make Vermont more "diverse". Add to that extreme Mass style tax and spend politics designed to force poor Vermonters out so every old house can be renovated into condo's. Did I mention fighting wind power on the mountains? Don't forget to add more box stores and 5 bedroom vinyl sided sub-developments, outlaw guns, require permits to paint your picket fence, and force all locals to leave! And one more thing.... Gaye Symington for president in 2012 with Ted Kennedy as VP!

Can someone please tell me were people from Massachusetts are NOT moving so I can move there?

THANKS

Come on over! We are actually embracing the whole wind turbine idea both in manufacturing, and usage. Of course jobs can be a bit difficult depending on what you do for work. And the Southeast corner is pretty depressed right now and that is the most crowded area, but the Northern part of Michigan is beautiful and some places are holding their own fairly decent. Laid-back attitude over most of the state.

I actually laughed when I read about a permit for painting a fence. After living in the Northeast for nearly 20 years, I called the city to ask about a permit to rebuild my fence around the backyard, They actually started laughing, and said as long as I didn't top it with razorwire and make it 10' tall to tick off the neighbors so they had to deal with a bunch of calls, they didn't care what I did with the fence, paint it, rebuild it, tear it down... whatever.

It used to be a Nazi state when it came to firearms, but they have actually relaxed their laws a LOT over the years, much to the dismay of the anti-gun crowd. We are now a Shall issue state when it comes to CCW's and hunting and fishing are still big. Inland fishing will rival anything the Northeast has to offer and best most of the Northeast fishing. We don't have salt water, but do have miles after mile of sugar sand freshwater beaches for sunning and swimming in the Summers.

You make some unfair, sweeping generalizations. My only suggestion to you is to move down south, or somewhere very far away. Ciao!

While I agree with much of what you say. For you to blame this crap on Mass transpants is bizarre to me. You live in the most socialist state in the union and it is hairy armpitted lunacy that is as homegrown as maple syrup.

Seriously, if you want to live somewhere that is relatively immune to the tide of gentrification by wealthy urbanites buying up land and changing the community, I suggest you move somewhere that is is poor and undesirable to begin with. Poor, because it will be mostly free of the wealthy urban Massachusetts types you complain of (and the exist in EVERY major metro area). Undesirable, because it will not be likely to attract these same folks as they flee their cities. I know that does not necessarily sound appealing, but it is the only way to truly avoid the problems you seem to have.

Of course, Vermont is a beautiful state. But the cost of living there will be dealing with the influx of wealth and change. Only you can decide if it is worth staying, but it sounds like you have made up your mind already. Good luck.

The original post is so ridiculous. I think Massachusetts is wonderful and I don't think people from Massachusetts are ruining Vermont at all.

I think he maybe talking about the "Hipsters'" movement that have sweeped New York City, and have changed multitude of neighborhoods, and have many, many New Yorkers up in arms, because they have been forced out of their Manhattan, and Brooklyn apartments to give way to condos and higher rents.

Many of them are leaving the San Fernando Valley, of California, Seattle, Washington, and other expensive midwesterns states. They seem to prefer taking over poor or working-class neighborhoods and changing them to suit their needs. They seem to have their own agenda in mind.

There have been many threads on this subject on the NYC/Citi-Data forums.

The question is not if they are ruining Vermont or not, but if his description of these people and their agenda , is accurate or not..

Oh I think the OP is accurate. I know these kind of people and count some of them among my friends. They are interesting to be around but I'm glad they'll never constitute a majority in my red state.

I truly enjoy the occasional excursion to the people's republic of Asheville, but I'm just as happy to return home over the mountains at the end of the day.
